Fossil records reveal that ancient relatives of the panda roamed Earth millions of years ago. For centuries, though, the giant panda was a mysterious, little-known creature living quietly in the misty mountains of central China.

The Western world only learned about pandas in 1869, when French naturalist Armand David received a panda skin from a local hunter. This discovery sparked global curiosity, and soon pandas became coveted by zoos and museums. In 1936, a cub named Su Lin became the first live panda in the United States, causing “panda-mania” and inspiring a tradition of "panda diplomacy"—China’s way of sharing pandas as a symbol of friendship.

Where Do Pandas Live?

Giant pandas are found in the temperate forests high in China’s Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. These lush, cool forests are packed with their favorite food: bamboo.

Pandas really are bamboo experts! They need at least two different types of bamboo nearby so they can eat all year long. To get enough energy, pandas have to eat a whopping 26 to 84 pounds of bamboo a day—spending up to 16 hours daily snacking!

Pandas are full of surprises! Here are a few amazing things about them:

• They're Bears, But Different: Unlike most bears, pandas don’t hibernate. Instead, they move to lower elevations in winter to find more food.
• The “Sixth” Finger: Pandas have a special wrist bone (like a thumb!) that helps them grab bamboo. It’s this “handiness” that inspired our book!
• Tiny Beginnings: Panda cubs are born super small—about the size of a stick of butter—and need lots of care from their mothers.
• Great Climbers and Swimmers: Even though they look clumsy, pandas can climb trees and swim quite well.

How Many Pandas Are Left in the World?

Giant pandas were once in great danger from habitat loss and deforestation. For a long time, they were listed as endangered. But conservation actions—like creating protected reserves and restoring bamboo forests—have made a huge difference.

Today, there are about 1,864 giant pandas living in the wild, with another 600 in zoos and breeding centers. Thanks to these efforts, pandas are now classified as "vulnerable" instead of "endangered."
